OPC UA Client and Modbus TCP Client: Hence this gateway will connect to a 3rd party OPC UA server and read or write tags. On the other hand, it will be a Modbus client and it can read or write data from a Modbus server.

This mode is useful when you have Modbus TCP based server devices and you need a solution to read values from them and write them to your OPC server. Or you want to constantly read OPC UA tags and write these values on a Modbus server device.

OPC UA Client and Modbus TCP server: This is probably the most common mode of operation. And in this mode the gateway is configured to read OPC UA tags and publish them on Modbus TCP as a server.

OPC UA – Modbus TCP Gateway Solutions

So, a 3rd party building automation/management system (BAS/BMS) can now read all this data on Modbus (and hence have access to the OPC UA data via the gateway). It is also possible to write OPC UA tags from the Modbus side. So, the BAS/BMS system can set values on the OPC UA server via the gateway.
